457 Visa

The 457 Visa is a Temporary Work Visa that allows skilled worker to stay in Australia and work for their Sponsor Business for a period up to:

  • Four years, after the visa is granted, if your occupation is listed on the MLTSSL List (Medium and long term Strategic Skilled List)
  • Two years, after the visa is granted, if your occupation is not on the MLTSSL List.

The 457 Visa can be lodge if you are either in or outside Australia.

To be eligible to apply the 457 visa you must:

  • be nominated by a sponsor and your occupation has to be on the List of Eligible Skilled Occupation
  • meet skill requirement and pass a skills assessment to prove your skills and ability on your occupation
  • English proficiency

Regarding the proficiency of English, you need to be able to speak, write and understand a sufficient level of English while you are in Australia.
The recognized English test in Australia are the following:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
  • Occupational English Test (OET)
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test (TOEFL iBT)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic test
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) test (which was conducted on or after 1 January 2015).

Other compulsory requirements to be eligible to apply for a 457 visa are:
1) Health requirements which means you must meet certain health requirements and take some health examination in one of the clinic recognized from the Australian Government.
This applies to you and any members of your family unit included in your application. You are able to organize your health examinations upfront before lodging a visa application.

2) Character requirements. You must be prepared to provide a police certificate from each country you have lived in for 12 months or more during the past 10 years and after turn the age of 16.

3) Debts with the Australian Government you must no have outstanding debts to the Australian Government or have arranged a repay any outstanding debts before the visa can be granted.

How can I prove I have competent English?

As many overseas workers were not qualifying for the visa 457 because of the English level, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection considered to amend the required score to help people on gaining their visa to remain and work in Australia.

Can I cancel my insurance while I am still a 457-visa holder?

All visas granted on or after 14 September 2009 are subject to Condition 8501. This condition requires visa holders to maintain adequate arrangements for insurance for the duration of their stay in Australia. You can cancel your insurance if you arrange a new health cover one.

How much does it cost to apply?
